Morris Hirsch

No photo see the video below. I would like a photo showing me in front of a class, or even better, helping one or two kids.
Until I have one of those, no photo.

I came to teaching later than most of my classmates; after a long career in computer programming I began substitute teaching, and liked it so well that I decided to become a certified teacher. As a substitute, I have taught different ages and different subjects, and liked it all, but I plan to become a High School Physics teacher, to make the most effective use of my prior training.

I am still substitute teaching as often as I can. I like it, and it brings in some money. I will take pretty much any subjects except foreign languages, which I don't speak, but I have even done that when they needed me to. It worked out surprisingly well.

I try to read widely, especially on current issues concerning science and technology, and their intersection with politics and the economy.

I buy books knowing I may never find time to read them. I don't know how many books I have, but estimating it might make a nice "Fermi exercise".

How I Got Here

Teaching Inspiration - MorrisH

Outside of School

My other interests include gardening, being outdoors as much as possible, and Contra Dancing
I will take the opportunity to include a few links here, we always try to interest new people. Here are a few video links, there are many more

Rehoboth, Massachusetts Contra Dance
The dances are at Goff Hall (home of Rehoboth's Blanding Library and the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society), 124 Bay State Road in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. ...
www.contradancelinks.com/rehoboth.html

Rehoboth is the most all age friendly venue, many dancers came with their parents as young teens, now older and still coming with friends. Quite a few two generation dance families. A few weddings too.

Brown University Contra Dance The Brown University contra dance has been running for over fifteen years.
It is currently held first and third Fridays. ...
www.groverlicious.com/brown_contra_dance.htmlLots of students of course but all ages welcome and present.

Worth a mention, no one drinks at or before a dance, it just is not done. It makes the dancing far too confusing. Going out after a dance is more likely ice cream than alcohol, but that varies by venue and by people.

Observations and Reflections

Things I learned visiting two well run classrooms.

OR-1 - MorrisH Class opening, greeting, homework routines. I think routine is the key. I see how well it works.
OR-2 - MorrisH Classroom Management aka Discipline, really just keep it worth listening to and they will.
OR-3 - MorrisH Working with the kids, already some experience from subbing, love it, that's why I'm here!
OR-4 - MorrisH More Discipline, everyone's least favorite topic. They will test your patience at times. Keep on!
OR-5 - MorrisH My thoughts on reaching the unmotivated, just my opinions of what can and should be done.

See the Style page for all of it wrapped up together. Lots of clips from these observations are in there.

Teaching Portfolio

I had some ideas coming in, due to my substitute teaching. I have to say I learned a lot in this and other classes, and my observation visits to other schools.
Seeing it "done right" is really useful. My current thinking, which no doubt will change further is here Morris Teaching Style

Here is the unit plan and some lessons developed in this class EDC 430 Waves
"Energy carried by waves, either mechanical or electromagnetic, plays an important part in many processes of the physical world.
Wave Energy detected by our senses of hearing and sight provides us with much of our knowledge of the world around us.
This unit examines how waves are produced, travel, and interact with materials."

Some good ideas but it took more time than I expected and never got finished as it should have.
Biggest problem, I need to learn to use new tools for authoring. Old fashioned text is not enough.
